Nursing Philosophy

Philosophy of Nursing

The profession of nursing allows me the privilege to serve others during their most intimate moments, their sicknesses, changes in their health (good and bad), happy moments, and life changes. Nurses must be adaptable as the profession is constantly changing as new knowledge and best practice is introduced. Nurses must be able to take the knowledge they learn from books, classrooms and continuing education and adapt it to their patient’s and families in order to promote and provide an optimum healing environment.

I believe that the core of nursing is caring, understanding and compassion. Without these three things we are merely babysitters, making sure that nothing bad happens on our watch. Nurses can serve in many different capacities and have the opportunity to influence the lives of people they don’t even come into direct contact with. Nurses can be involved in the care of Women and Children, Oncology, Cardiovascular patients, community nurses and be involved in legislature that affects the health promotion opportunities of those they have never met. Without caring, understanding, and compassion the drive to see the best in others, hope for future generations, and respect for life and death is lost.

The focus of nursing changes depending on the area where I work and whom I interact with. No matter where I work I will use the best knowledge available to provide compassionate, caring service for those under my care.

The vision I have for myself is, and has always been, to be the best nurse in whatever area it is I am working. I will maintain my knowledge so that I can provide the best care and promote health in whatever setting I may be in. I will be honest, ethical, patient, compassionate, non-judgmental, an advocate, and I will maintain the trust of my patients.

My focus at this time is my patient. The patient isn’t just the person lying in the bed. I will care for the patient and their family by answer questions, providing comfort, being honest, showing them respect regardless of whether they do or do not have the same values as me, being kind, and keeping them informed of what they can expect from me while I care for them.

I will treat my co-workers with dignity and respect. I will not gossip or put down others. I will encourage my colleagues to provide care that is evidence based, and promotes a healing, positive work environment. I will respect the advice and skills of my colleagues and take their experience into consideration.

I will maintain a healthy lifestyle so that I can perform my job to the best of my abilities. As a nurse I interact with many people in many different settings and I have the opportunity to be example of health and wellness. I will take appropriate precautions at work in order to maintain my own safety now and in the future.
