Statement of Purpose
During my Senior Capstone experience I hope to develop my skills in
recognizing acute life threatening situations, managing time and resources, and
experience what Emergency Care is all about by working side by side with
physicians and BSN prepared nurses in the care of acutely ill patients,
patient’s experiencing trauma, and patients in life-and-death situations. During
this time I will find opportunities for nursing research, to be a patient
advocate, and to exhibit culturally competent care.
Goals
1. Recognize acute situations and changes in ED patient conditions that
warrant immediate or more intensive care and initiate the appropriate care.
2. Recognize and act on nursing research opportunities that arise in
order to improve knowledge base and facilitate evidence based practice.
3. Be proactive in care and research, involve myself in the experiences
in the ED so that I will know if Trauma NP is the right area for further
schooling.
4. Improve problem solving and decision making skills by asking questions,
following advise given by physicians and BSN prepared nurses during my clinical
experience, and researching new illnesses/diseases/situations that arise that I
am unfamiliar with during my clinical experience. Set goals with clinical coach
before each session and follow up on goals.
5. Demonstrate the professional, legal, and ethical values learned
throughout the course of my BSN education while caring for ED patients.
Description of Activities
I will work side by side with my clinical coach during my Senior
Capstone for the allotted amount of hours required. During this time I will
gain new experiences in triaging patients, caring for patients during code
situations, care for children and adults that have experienced trauma’s,
advocating for patient’s rights, and enhancing my skills in caring for acute
and critically ill patients. I will productively seek out leaning experiences
and engage in nursing research as opportunities arise.
On or before April 8 I will submit a reflective paper reflecting
outlining what I have learned during the experience including journal entries,
a self evaluation, and an evaluation from my preceptor about our experiences
together.
On or before April 8, at the end of the Clinical Experience I will
submit the completion verification form.
During the clinical experience I will participate in class discussions
and post entries and replies to the Blog following the Blog Rubric provided.
Evaluation
Criteria that will determine if goals are met include:
Assignments/blog posts turned in on time.
Required hours completed.
Journal entries completed including new experiences learned.
Areas for improvement discussed with clinical coach at the end of each

after each clinical experience.
